How to become a global citizen
A global citizen is someone that is able to identify themselves as a member of an emerging world community, someone who actively contributes towards the combined values of the community for the benefit of the community as a whole. With the ever-globalizing world that we live in constantly evolving and bringing in new people of diverse cultures into our lives, it is important that we learn to appreciate and understand different cultures instead of conforming to outdated beliefs that restrict us to physical borders.
“A global citizen is someone who identifies with being part of an emerging world community and whose
actions contribute to building this community’s values and practices.”
According to Kosmos Journal
It comes as a natural instinct to most of us to identify and group up with individuals of similar characteristics, shared beliefs and values. The purpose of identifying with a group was primarily for survival. The community collaborated their efforts to satisfy social and economic needs. Over time, these groups’ bond grew stronger and bigger, leading to the formation of a functioning society with governing structures, which were built to enforce their mutual beliefs and values onto the future generations. However, these communities were generally restricted to physical geographical borders.
In the world we live in today, a world where its economy is run on world trade markets and international tourism, conforming to identifying with one community is nearly impossible for most people. Technological advances in communication, transportation facilities and the ability to easily retain information from the internet means more people have greater accessibility and the ability to interact with global markets. More people than ever before are able to travel the world, if not physical then even virtually. We can now connect with people at opposite ends of the world. Be that making a pen-pal in opposite hemispheres or contributing to humanitarian aid with war stricken countries through charities and NGOs, or traveling the world, the bottom line is – we have never been as connected with the rest of the world as we are as of now.
Therefore, it would be logical to assume that people have now begun to identify with various communities, adopting new values, allegiances to countries through dual citizenship, new political beliefs etc. Living in an ever-globalizing world we start to adopt what is referred to as a ‘Global identity’ making us ‘Global citizens’. Because of which, we adopt a new set of responsibilities to the rest of the global community that we all live in.
How to become a global citizen is possible by adopting this new identity, we are opening ourselves up to learning new cultures, creating better awareness of our own cultures, and increasing our over-all understanding and tolerance. It is important to adopt such an outlook when trying to derive the benefits globalization. “With great power, comes great responsibility” as the line goes, while having the whole world’s information at our fingertips, it is important that we consider how our usage of that information affects the rest of our community. Social benefit should always be greater than social cost.
